Saturday Night Live Season 36 Reviews - Episode 19 - Helen Mirren / Foo Fighters

But her titties exist in a place beyond space and time

Cold Open: Presidential Address
1 Star

Fredbama talks about everyone’s compromises to avoid a government shutdown and how unhappy everyone is.  Maybe it’s just that signature Jim Downey tone but this feels like a rerun.  We get a little meta at the end with Obama calling out SNL fans being unhappy about this presidential address, have they been reading my blogs?

Helen Mirren Monologue
2 Stars

The male cast sings There Is Nothin’ Like A Dame from South Pacific in honor of Dame Helen Mirren.  This season does love its musical monologues.

Mort Mort Feingold: Accountant For The Stars
2 Stars

The return of a sketch I wasn’t so crazy about the first time.  It’s pretty stupid, which I enjoy but not only is this a recurring sketch it’s filled with recurring impressions with the same take as before.  James Franco has a lot of jobs, the Kardashians are dumb with big butts, Will Smith is proud of his kids, and we end with Fred as Kadaffi which I feel like has been in every episode this season.  We also get Taran as the then recently out of the closet Ricky Martin and Paul gets to pull double impression duty as he also brings back his Johnny Depp to pair with his Franco.  I hate to be so negative but neither of the impressions are that accurate or funny.

Helen Mirren's Magical Bosom
4 Stars

Nasim grabs Helen’s breasts in her dressing room and is transported to a magical world of immense bliss.  She seems to fully understand the universe now that she’s copped a squeeze.  Fun visual montage of what touching Helen’s rack is like complete with O.J. trying on the glove, Teen Wolf dunking, Brendan Fraser at the Golden Globes, and Bobby as the bee girl from the Blind Melon music videos.  Now that’s a collection of random references.

Fox And Friends
4 Stars

The first appearance of this often recurring sketch.  Pretty much all of the touchstones are here right at the beginning.  There’s Lou the fact checker, Bobby’s vacant state and dumb responses, the racism, the sensationalism of non-issues, and of course the scroll of corrections which compels you to watch again frame by frame.  Which I did and my favorites were “Green is a color”, “Jane Fonda lives in America”, and “No one has ever eaten a pizza with their butt”.

Mary Shelley
1 Star

Fred Armisen as Frankenstein’s Monster…wait, why does that ring a bell?  Oh shit, you’re making me remember that terrible gay Frankenstein sketch from Season 30.  Thankfully this sketch is a little better than that one but that only means it’s bad instead of nausea inducing.
People ask Mary Shelley where she got her inspiration for the monster and it’s her landlord Frank Stein.  He’s green, has bolts in his neck, hates fire, and his sounds of complaints resemble angry grunts.  It’s really unfunny.

Foo Fighters
"Rope"

Weekend Update
James Carville talks about the government shutdown and how ugly he is.  He was raised by eels.
Shelly Elaine, a flight attendant on board a 747 that lost cabin pressure, shows up to talk about the incident.
And Jean K Jean makes his 7th of 9 appearances.  I was pretty zoned out by this point.  I took one note during this segment.  It just says ‘cheese’.  I believe it refers to him talking about cheese.

The Best Of Both Worlds
2 Stars

Andy plays Hugh Jackman, the buff action star of X-Men and host of the Tony’s, who welcomes other multi-faceted celebrities like 300 and Phantom Of The Opera Star Gerard Butler, Ice Cube, and Julie Andrews who surprisingly has no qualms about stabbing a dude with a spear.  For a celebrity hosted talk show it’s not terrible but I knocked points off for Andy’s giggling at the end.

Crunk-Ass Easter Festival
4 Stars

I always welcome a visit from DJ Supersoak and Lil Blaster.  This time they entice us with a music festival featuring Mrs. Potato Dick, a scrambled egg hunt, methed-out coyotes, standup comedy from the Menendez brothers, Juwanna Mann in IMAX, and a free kick in the dick.

The Roosevelts
3 Stars

Clips from a historically inaccurate biopic about FDR where he and Eleanor do cocaine with Teddy Roosevelt.  Eleanor also gets Hitler to start WWII to make her husband famous and makes out with Marilyn Monroe.  At this point I feel the need to thank the producers of SNL for giving me something I never knew I wanted so badly.
Weird boners aside, I liked this.  It probably would have been better served as a pre-tape, especially since some kind of technical flub forces the camera to stay on an uncomfortable looking Paul for a few awkward seconds before cutting to the final punchline, a naked Eleanor Roosevelt ordering the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  Oops, there goes another weird boner.

Perspectives Photo Studios
4 Stars

Jason runs a photography studio exclusively for dick pics.  Some solid gags involving the tricks he uses to make your junk look bigger like clever angles, putting it next to tiny objects, or just using another dude’s wang.  Also a fun inclusion of Seth playing himself making an endorsement.

Foo Fighters return with "Walk"

Bongo's Clown Room
3 Stars

I mistakenly remember a lot more of these but this is the first of only two appearances of Jason’s strip club DJ.  Next season he’ll be introducing male strippers.  Some fun lines from Jason but I feel like the dancing should be more fun.  I did like Nasim’s sexy pole disinfecting but Helen, Kristen, and Abby’s dances just felt like quick time filler.  Odd that the sketch set in a strip club is the least sexiest sketch of the episode.  We get our second Dave Grohl cameo of the night, he was last seen hanging out in Helen’s magical ta-tas.

How I Would Have Lorne Michaels-ed It
Open with Fox And Friends, something the show would eventually start doing, it’s got a heck of a lot more energy than a Fredbama cold open.  That and the monologue started this one off on a real weak note but it recovered a bit then crashed again with the Mary Shelley sketch.  I would cut that, replace it with another Foo Fighters song and move The Roosevelts to the front half.  I also hate to advocate more pre-filmed bits but both The Roosevelts and Mort Mort Feingold could have been saved so much with some tight editing.
Host Analysis
I hate to call her a dud but she was close.  Very stiff but she gave a good effort to something outside her wheelhouse.
Final Thoughts
The pre-tapes were fun and we got the debut of Fox And Friends.  Plus you got Foo Fighters.  So it’s not a bad episode.  It was hard to get too excited about it but that’s just par for the course this season.  A slow start, a stinker from Fred, and a long Weekend Update keep it from getting to decent territory.  Plus these aren’t my favorite Foo Fighters songs.  All in all a pretty forgettable one with the exception of the Helen Mirren on Abby Elliott action.
Up Next
Tina Fey returns to host for the third time
