Saturday Night Live Season 37 Reviews - Episode 6 - Emma Stone / Coldplay

“90 minutes, 100 twinks, 1 unforgettable summer”

Cold Open: The Republican Presidential Debate
4 Stars

Another debate cold open but I liked how they cut to the funny and really only focused on Bill’s Rick Perry being an idiot.  I don’t think Bobby, Kristen, or Taran got any lines in this.  Nice ending with Mitt Romney shooting him Of Mice And Men style.

Emma Stone Monologue
3 Stars

Andy pops from the ceiling as Spider-Man.
“Aren’t you just redoing the same monologue Kirsten Dunst did like 10 years ago?”
“Uh, yeah, aren’t you just doing the same Spider-Man movie from 10 years ago?”
Not to be a nerd, but I was thinking the same thing.  Then Andrew Garfield shows up because…cameos are fun?

Secret Word
2 Stars

It’s the 6th appearance of this sketch.  Emma has the best moments as a disgraced pageant queen who makes out with her ventriloquist dummy.  It’s just always exactly the same.  If Kristen played a new character or they switched up the joke of her always saying the secret word out loud maybe it could have stayed fresh but this one joke sketch should never have shown up this much.

WXPD News New York
3 Stars

Appearance #4 of Herb Welch, but since I skipped Season 36 it’s the first for me.  A solid outing, not sure I’d feel the same had I just watched it 3 times, and a really funny moment of Herb rubbing his microphone on Kristen’s chest and crotch when he doesn’t believe she’s a woman.

Wish It Would Rain
0 Stars

So we’re just padding to get to 100 now?  This was a big lump of nothing.  Andy laments that it won’t rain during his music video.  Then he gets pissed on.  Then Emma comes out with a big butt.

Coldplay
"Paradise"

Weekend Update
The Devil is shocked to learn about the Penn State scandal.
And Garth and Kat have a new backup singer with Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

Les Jeunes De Paris
4 Stars

Another sketch that debuted last season, coincidentally in the Emma Stone episode.  It’s the 3rd for the show but 1st for me.  I always enjoyed these mostly because they stood out as something new and different.  Just some dancing and French stereotypes, you get hairy armpits, Napoleon, The Red Balloon, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Bridal Shower Gifts
4 Stars

Emma plays an eccentric introvert at a bridal shower.  She brought anal lubricant, gay porn, and a human toilet.  Solid performance from Emma, and it’s nice to finally get our first non-recurring sketch of the night.  Enjoyed the ending as well with Nasim’s horny old grandma trying to get her money’s worth out of the human toilet.

Coldplay return with "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall"

Sad Song
5 Stars

Nasim wants to sit in her office and cry while listening to Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ but so  do Emma, Kristen, and eventually the whole office including the janitor and window washer.  We even get a nice cutaway to backstage to see Coldplay crying while watching on a monitor.  Very fun sketch with everybody getting a few seconds to humorously ugly cry.  Nasim’s ice cream tears and Bill’s running mascara were my favorites.

We're Going To Make Technology Hump
3 Stars

The last sketch felt like a perfect ending that this feels like filler as a result.  Just some phones and cameras fake boning.  Did you know Jay Pharoah is part of the cast?  Well, his hands are at least.

Thanks for showing restraint thus far this season with the recurring characters but you don’t have to do them all in the 6th episode.  Luckily since the season to this point has been light on the repeats (with Bill’s Vince Blight game show host getting the most appearances) it didn’t feel like the usual drag.  It would have been nice to have something original in the front half.  Also Sad Song needs to be the 10-1 sketch.
Host Analysis
A delight.  Didn’t overshadow but brought it when needed in her two character pieces, Secret Word and Bridal Shower Gifts.
Final Thoughts
A solid episode.  A lot of recurring stuff but that didn’t bother me because a.) I skipped Season 36 and b.) the season has been pretty light on recurring this year so it had to start at some point.  The back half was definitely stronger, Coldplay was good, Emma was charming, that Digital Short sucked.
Up Next
Jason Segal + Florence + The Machine
