“You just referenced a Seinfeld episode and Hitler’s political party that took over half of Europe”
Cold Open: The Ghost Of Kaddafi
1 Star
The recently murdered Kadaffi delivers a message from Hell. I swear I watched this whole thing. I didn’t fast forward but I might as well have, I remember nothing about this immediately after it’s over. Is Fred in his Darrell Hammond years? Where it seemed Darrell was only there for political impressions, Fred is just necessary for foreign dictators.
Charlie Day Monologue
Charlie gets some advice from 5-Timer Danny DeVito and plays piano and harmonica. Great energy from Charlie and always fun to see Danny DeVito.
Kim's Fairytale Divorce
I don’t keep up with the Kardashians so this felt too inside baseball to me. Taran’s Bruce Jenner is terrifying.
The Dr. Oz Show
Dr. Oz makes Charlie role play as his own feces traveling through his dead rectum. The ending suggests that Dr. Oz had ulterior motives for embarrassing Charlie but the sketch doesn’t make that clear. I feel like this would work better with a less funny host. Like, save this for Charles Barkley.
Greek Gods
The Greek gods try to solve the financial crisis in modern day Greece but all their ideas involve war, orgies, or sex with animals. I wasn’t digging this and it just kept going. A very long sketch, although it’s nice to see the entire cast. Adam Levine cameos as Yanni, it took me a while to figure out who he was. Then when I realized it was Adam Levine I tried to figure out the connection between him and Charlie Day because I forgot he was the musical guest. So I spent most of the sketch thinking about that.
It's Getting Freaky With Cee Lo Green!
Cee Lo Green hosts a talk show to help people get more freaky in the bedroom. Is Cee Lo known for weird sex? I don’t know much about him but that’s always bugged me about this sketch, I don’t quite understand the premise. Two thumbs up for Bill as Colonel Nasty though.
The Original Kings Of Catchphrase Comedy Volume 2
A repeat from last season. Everyone loves those quick impression sketches but I want more stuff like this where we can see everybody do a quick character. Hate to nitpick but Black Stewie Griffin and The Squeefy Brothers didn’t quite fit the catchphrase concept. But loved Jason’s ‘Who said that?’ and Bill’s ‘Watch it or I’ll suck your cock’. We also get Seth as Boston Powers, giving me an Update alternative for Seth’s best moment section at the end of the year.
Maroon 5
"Moves Like Jagger"
Weekend Update
A drunk Rick Perry shows up to defend his drunken actions at a recent debate. There’s a lot of giggling going on in this one but it kinda works with the character.
Judy Grimes for the 6th and final time. And for the 6th and final time I will say the same thing, I liked this once and while I respect the performance I never needed to see it again.
Because Of One Dolphin
Charlie has trouble focusing during a scene because of Taran’s loud dolphin trainer next to him. I remember watching this episode live and having a realization that Taran might one day become a fave of mine. I never disliked him but this sketch made me take notice for some reason.
Maroon 5 return with "Stereo Hearts"
Crime Scene
I watched this one live and remembered liking this episode, I think it’s just these last two sketches. I forgot all about the first half of the show. This is a classic and I wish the whole show had this energy. Charlie claims to know nothing about Seinfeld, baseball, and WWII despite making references to them while investigating a murder in an apartment that looks like the Seinfeld set. I loved all of this and Jason and Charlie are a great comedic duo and I’m guessing that’s why Charlie was tapped to host (go rent Horrible Bosses, this summer’s big comedy available on DVD now).

How I Would Have Lorne Michaels-ed It
Swap the Kardashians with Kings Of Catchphrase Comedy. Shorten Greek Gods so we can fit one more sketch in after Update and cut Cee Lo Green in favor of something that’s not a talk show hosted by a celebrity impression.
Host Analysis
I feel the same way about him as I did with Zach Galifianakis’s first episode. It seems like a perfect fit and there’s moments where it clicks but then you realize that it’s never gonna be what you want. I want to see Charlie Day and SNL’s styles to come together and they did at the end but for the rest of the episode I was just watching Charlie in SNL sketches where he dresses up as poop and a sex dinosaur.
Final Thoughts
Outside of the monologue I was not feeling this episode until Bill came out as Colonel Nasty and told Abby to serve up a big old plate of butt. After that the show kicked into gear and everything after that was good (what little there was). Charlie was a fun host, I wish he would have come back and been used a little better. Maroon 5 was solid. There was just that long stretch post monologue to Kings Of Catchphrase Comedy where I was bored silly.
