Saturday Night Live Season 36 Reviews - Episode 3 - Jane Lynch / Bruno Mars

Keep it real and keep it moist

Cold Open: Ask Gloria Allred
3 Stars

I’m not gonna argue with giving Nasim a solo cold open and if that means I have to watch Gloria Allred answer viewer questions then so be it.

Jane Lynch Monologue
2 Stars

We get our 2nd musical monologue in a row as Jane sings a song about her Glee character that she wrote while drunk.

damn it, my mom is on facebook filter
4 Stars

Now that your mom has joined Facebook you need to watch what you post.  This filter can change pictures of you smoking a bong into you playing a saxophone and a picture of you naked is now a pic of you in a shirt that says Moms Rule.

Glee
1 Star

All of these Glee references are flying over my head but they would have in 2010 as well.  I never watched a single episode of Glee so I have no idea who everyone is supposed to be playing.  I do realize that Andy is supposed to be gay and Kenan is supposed to be a woman and Kristen is Gilly.  The first Gilly without Will Forte who was the best part of these sketches.  Also the first one outside the classroom which loses Abby and Bobby as the students who often got laughs.  This makes you realize that if there was one thing you could lose in the Gilly sketches…it was Gilly.

The New Boyfriend Talk Show
5 Stars

A young Andy interviews the man who just woke up in his mom’s bed.  Not only that, it’s the 100th episode and we take a look back at previous guests like Gene Simmons, Verne Troyer, Joaquin Phoenix, and Magic Johnson.  This was so good.  I had this at 4 stars just because I’m very conservative with the full 5 but then I realized that there isn’t anything I could think to improve this.  It’s the perfect length with solid performances and every twist was fun.

The Coven To Elect Christine O'Donnell
2 Stars

Dated political material with Christine O’Donnell claiming she’s not a witch.  If she was a witch she’d cast a spell to make us forget that she’s a witch, but she lacks the correct amount of newts for that.

Secret Word
2 Stars

Mindy Grayson just said the secret word, didn’t see that coming.  Oh wait, yes I did, because this is the 3rd one of these and it’s the same joke every time.  Jane’s character is a Phyllis Diller-esque comedian which is fun but I’m beyond tired of seeing this.

Relaxation Therapy
3 Stars

Not sure why this didn’t work for me more than it did.  Jane keeps inserting herself into Andy’s relaxation meditations.  I think it’s just because once you get the first reveal of Jane showing up randomly you can spot it coming each time after.

Returns & Exchanges
2 Stars

What if Denzel Washington worked at an exchange counter?  I think it might go a little something like this.  On the one hand, this is a really lazy way to shoehorn your impression on to the show.  I guess there isn’t another hand.  Jay’s Denzel impression is good but I can’t say I find it funny at all.

Bruno Mars
"Just The Way You Are"

Weekend Update
Mark Zuckerberg gives his thoughts on The Social Network and apologizes for poking.
And Miguel Conjeros promotes tourism in Mexico but doesn’t quite understand English when the subject of drug cartels is brought up.

The Suze Orman Show
2 Stars

Suze welcomes her former roommate who claims to no longer be a lesbian.  There’s little talk of financial planning and a lot of allusions to muff diving.  Feels odd but I guess since both Jane Lynch and Suze Orman are lesbians this is what they came up with.

Sunday Night Football
2 Stars

Jane’s theme song to Sunday Night Football refuses to end.  I wish it got a little more absurd but it’s just long and meandering.  This feels like something Maya would have done in Season 29.  I had no idea until I saw it listed on SNL Archives but Jane was supposed to be playing Faith Hill?

Bruno Mars returns with "Grenade"

Tax Masters
2 Stars

Jason has a half-formed twin growing out the side of his head.  This didn’t have much going for it other than the sight gag, but it was a fun sight gag.  It was obviously shortened for time.  Jason starts speeding through his lines at one point and we end with a quick cutaway of Fred as the half-formed twin in closeup but the sketch fades out before he can really say anything.

How I Would Have Lorne Michaels-ed It
I liked the overloaded front half but there wasn’t much in the back half.  You could cut the Christine O’Donnell piece just to give enough room for Tax Masters.
Host Analysis
I remember being happy for Jane Lynch when Glee became a big hit.  I had no interest in watching it but I was glad that lady I liked in the Christopher Guest movies got a successful show.  I liked her character in Secret Word but there wasn’t much else I can say she elevated.  Her two mom roles could have been played by anyone.  She didn’t hurt anything and I don’t blame her for anything not working.  This was kind of a wash.
Final Thoughts
There was only one sketch I would be interested in watching again (New Boyfriend Talk Show) and there wasn’t much else I cared for.  The 3 recurring characters from Kristen gave this a feeling of sameness.  How exciting can an episode with Gilly, Mindy Grayson, and Suze Orman be?  But I didn’t hate watching it.  Much like the last episode, this has a business as usual feel.  They’re a well-oiled machine at this point churning out assembly line comedy.  Jane is a solid enough host so it’s hard to hate on this but it’s also hard to get too enthusiastic about writing a sentence about it.
