Saturday Night Live Season 36 Reviews - Episode 4 - Emma Stone / Kings Of Leon

Is that Mick Jagger?  No, it’s a fat kid on a Slip ‘N Slide

Cold Open: Reid Rally
1 Star

Obama and Harry Reid downplay their friendship in order to get votes in Nevada where the President is unpopular.  I couldn’t help but stare at Jay this entire cold open (because not much funny was happening anywhere else on the screen).  I wonder if he’s thinking if he’ll get the Obama gig next episode or next season.  Two seasons from now?!?  That’s ridiculous.  Paul gets his first “Live from New York…” and apparently has been a cast member for the last 3 episodes.

Emma Stone Monologue
2 Stars

Emma fields questions from nerds and thwarts their romantic advances.  After Paul gets the cold open, Taran gets what feels like his first moment with a pretty funny Michael Cera impression.

Baby Spanx
3 Stars

Some fun visuals of Kristen and Bill hiding their fat baby in a pair of Spanx.

Dream Home Extreme
2 Stars

2nd appearance of this Kristen character is just like the first.  She gets excited but the winner of the sweepstakes doesn’t.  We even get the same punchline with them getting overly emotional over something small (in this case hard boiled eggs).  It’s just a sketch about Kristen acting wacky.  Weird to see Emma in a role where she is supposed to be dull considering how prolific she would be on SNL.  I feel like you give this role to your Charles Barkleys and Michael Phelpses or the people you’re unsure can nail the comedy.

WXPD Channel 9 News
2 Stars

Bill reports on new teen fads like souping, trampolining, and skyping.  Bill’s funny but the sketch gets real repetitive with Kristen’s panicky mother responding to every act.  Once again Emma gets the least fun role as an incredulous teenager.  Her part is basically to go “Hey, that funny stuff you’re talking about isn’t true.  Can you stop talking about it?”.

I Broke My Arm
1 Star

I remember watching this episode live and thinking the Digital Shorts have officially gone downhill.  I just don’t get this.  Emma repeatedly slips in grape jelly, sings about it, then the jelly starts to sing.  When Emma hosts next season she’s in an equally infuriating short, I Wish It Would Rain.
Yeah, I just don’t get this.

The View
1 Star

This was a nothing sketch even compared to other View sketches.  There was nothing to say here, we’re just repeating the catchphrases.  Emma comes out as Lindsay Lohan but nothing of interest happens.

Wrangler Open Fly Jeans
3 Stars

Brett Favre’s jeans come with an open fly, mocking a then-recent dick pic sent out by the quarterback.

Kings Of Leon
"Radioactive"

Weekend Update
Jimmy McMillan was a candidate for New York Governor and head of The Rent Is Too Damn High Party and a Kenan Thompson character in real life.  My problem with this is that there’s no exaggeration, this is just what the real guy was like.  You’re not parodying anything, you’re just parroting it.  But Jimmy McMillan was already a spoof so there’s really nothing you could do to exaggerate him.
John Mulaney shares some things he loves like movies starring horses, his dad, and the end of Mad Men episodes.
And Stefon entices is with clubs filled with Cosby faces, fat Urkels, and Jamaican nurses wearing shower caps.

Les Jeunes de Paris
3 Stars

The debut of this sketch before it became a barrage of obscure French references.  The is more about the dance and the mood which I enjoyed.

My Brother Knows Everything
2 Stars

Nasim hosts a show about how she thinks her older brother is the coolest.  Some cute bits like ranking the guys on her older brother’s posters, but this feels like well-worn territory.  Maybe it’s just the homemade talk show format which we’ve seen hundreds of times but this seems a little stale.  Can’t argue with Nasim getting a sketch though.

"Sex" Ed Vincent's Sex Symposium
4 Stars

Well look who decided to show up to SNL.  Paul gets the cold open and this piece of silliness.  “Sex Ed” Vincent runs a 3 day workshop where you’ll learn all about sex.  Whether it be peeing into a cardboard birthday hat or front of penis to side of penis contact.

Kings Of Leon return with "Pyro"

Googie Rene's Partially Damaged Halloween Costume Discount Basement
3 Stars

Googie Rene will put you in a Halloween costume and give you something to cover up the stain on it.  Go to a party as Marilyn Monroe with a gladiator shield.  You can also dig through the $2 stank basket.

The View
How I Would Have Lorne Michaels-ed It
You can’t do much worse than starting with a Fredbama cold open.  I would definitely just hand the reigns over to Jay now.  This was a pretty weak episode all around but the front half was exceptionally bad.  It didn’t start getting good until the underclassmen took over for a brief time with Taran, Nasim, and Paul’s pieces.  So I say move those up.  Start with The View because then you have nowhere to go but up.  I’ll appreciate anything of semi-quality after that so give me My Brother Knows Everything.  Move Dream Home and I Broke My Arm to after Update and replace them with Sex Ed and Les Jeunes.
Host Analysis
She was given no heavy lifting and it was throwing me for a loop.  This doesn’t seem like a future five-timer, this seems like your young starlet du jour gets thrown into some sketches.  She has to act bored next to a crazy Kristen, play the voice of reason next to a fun Bill, gets upstaged by some jelly in a very bad Digital Short, play Lindsay Lohan for like 90 seconds, and dance.  It wasn’t until My Brother Knows Everything that she got a funny line.  Then I enjoyed her in the last two sketches where she was basically a walk-on role.  Humble beginnings for the future Oscar winner.
Final Thoughts
Everything before Update is completely skippable.  The ‘souping’ sketch has a few smiles but it’s certainly not worth sitting through The View, I Broke My Arm, and Fredbama.  Kings Of Leon don’t add anything either.  The only things I’d recommend would be John Mulaney, Les Jeunes, and Sex Ed but if you wanted John Mulaney you have a multitude of avenues, this is the first Les Jeunes but it’s certainly not the most fun, and there’s another Sex Ed sketch in the Steve Buscemi episode next season which is a heck of a lot better than this one.  So I guess this whole episode is skippable.  Nothing against Emma but there is nothing here I need to see again.
Up Next
Jon Hamm hosts for the (as of 2023) final time.
