Saturday Night Live Season 36 Reviews - Episode 11 - Jim Carrey / The Black Keys

“Can I see one titty?”

Cold Open: A Message From The Mayor
1 Star

What’s worse, a Fredbama cold open or a Fred as Mayor Bloomberg cold open?  That can’t be the first time I’ve asked that question.  Mayor Bloomberg talks about the snowstorm and I am hoping for a Julian Assange interruption like we got in the last three episodes.

Jim Carrey Monologue
3 Stars

Jim notices a guy’s beautiful breasts, proposes to a female audience member, and brings the guy with the boobs backstage with him.

Rerun of Bosley Hair Restoration

Black Swan
4 Stars

A take off of Black Swan which is a movie I remember really liking but after watching this sketch realize I remember absolutely nothing about.  Nasim can dance the white swan but only Jim can dance the black swan and allure Bill’s director.  It’s a whole lot of Jim dancing all crazy and goofy but with Bill’s beautiful dramatic narration underneath.  I’m so glad everyone kept a straight face in this, it would have been ruined had the reality been broken.

Finding Your Power
4 Stars

I really like the tone of this sketch.  It’s very quiet until it crescendos into a joke.  It’s a nice palette cleanser after the lunacy of Black Swan.  Guests tell stories about how they asserted themselves only to be confronted with the video evidence where they crumbled.  Solid performances throughout.

Grady Wilson's Tantric 'n Tasty
2 Stars

5th and final time for Grady Wilson demonstrating sex acts with his friend.

The Worst Of Soul Train
3 Stars

A compilation of the absolute worst acts on Soul Train.  I know the joke is that the acts are supposed to be bad but I was really growing tired of watching intentionally awful songs.  Jason’s “Get Outta My Dreams And Into My Trunk” and Jim’s musical plea to see a titty saved it at the end though.

The Black Keys
"Howlin' For You"

Weekend Update
Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner stop by to talk about some political thing I don’t care about.  Bill’s Cowardly Lion-esque cries were fun though.
Anthony Crispino tells some second hand news about John McClain running for president, John Boehner getting a new set of speakers, and Brett Favre being retarded.
Cameron The Red-Winged Blackbird talks about birds falling from the sky which he dubs ‘The Aflockalypse’.  Then he’s joined by Elliott The Fish who warns of the ‘Apocafish’.  This is the dumbest bit in the world and everyone seems to know it.  But it’s fun.

Merryville Trolley Ride
4 Stars

Debut of this recurring sketch.  Jim, Taran, and Bill play evil animatronics tormenting Kenan on a broken down amusement park ride.  Great physicality from everyone.  Loved the visual of Kenan’s head replacing one of the robots as if they are making him one of them.

Psychic Medium
3 Stars

Jim’s psychic is revealed to be a former impressionist.  It seems like a flimsy premise that’s just an excuse for Jim to do some voices, and it is, but it’s decent.  He pretends that Jimmy Stewart, Billie Holliday, and Alan Thicke are visiting from beyond the grave.  Decent punchline when Vanessa’s dead relative is Marlon Brando which Jim can’t do.  Most of the fun comes from Jason’s reactions.

The Black Keys return with "Tighten Up"

A Taste Of New York
4 Stars

Fred, Kristen, and Jim are a homeless band who ask their audience of hotel guests if they can stay with them and if that fails at least use their room key to use their bathrooms.  Hard to call it fun but a nice tone for a 10-1 sketch, wish Kristen didn’t giggle during it.  Kinda ruins the joke that her character is supposed to be sad and hungry when she’s laughing.

How I Would Have Lorne Michaels-ed It
Just give me a better cold open.  There is no energy in Fred’s Mayor Bloomberg and I don’t know why you’d think starting the show with it would be a good idea.
Host Analysis
On the flip side, can one have too much energy?  He comes at it so strong that I was full after Black Swan.
Final Thoughts
It was a bit of a Jim Carrey takeover but I was expecting that.  I like him but he’s too big to fit in with the ensemble.  We took an SNL break for a Jim Carrey special this week so if that’s what your into, have at it.  This did feel like a breakout episode for Taran.  With Black Swan, Merryville Trolley Ride, and The Apocafish I think we can safely place him above Paul in the newbie hierarchy.
Up Next
Gwyneth Paltrow hosts for the 3rd time with musical guest Cee Lo Green.
